Ha ha it has been ONE MILLION YEARS since I posted links to any of my fic. So here's a bunch, and I'm eschewing the AO3 share format because it takes up too much space for so many fics. In chronological order:

As Moves the Glacier - Frostbite, Keaton/Victoria, 100 words. A sensation-play drabble, mostly for the purposes of getting the tag canonized.

Desert Flower - hockey RPF, Fleury, 100 words. A melancholy drabble (BUT NOT AS SAD AS FLOWER'S CONCUSSION ;__________;).

A Good Yarn is Hard to Find - hockey RPF, Granlund/Koivu, 1100 words. A very silly fic about Finns and sweaters that I wrote as a gift for fandomgiftbox.

As Lucky as Lucky Can Be - hockey RPF, Olli/Geno with background Sid/Geno, 4900 words. This is the sequel/companion piece to my Sid/Geno exchange fic from earlier this year. Someone mentioned they'd like to see more of Olli and Geno, and it just so happened I had already written several scenes from Olli's POV in order to kind of figure out where he was at. Somehow in September those scenes magically turned into a complete fic in the space of about three days. I'm really happy with how it turned out. I got to write Geno from a totally new perspective, because I've always paired him with other guys from the core before; I got to write Olli (<3); and I also got to show how Olli has no idea of most of what was going on in the original fic and doesn't care. Just dating Geno is quite enough for him to handle. :) :) :)

you touch my wires - hockey RPF, Olli/Tanger, 2400 words. A cyborg AU! This was for the flash exchange that happened last month. I'd been wanting to write this pairing, and then downjune mentioned she liked robot AUs, and suddenly it all came together. What two better guys than these two to angst about their bodies not performing as designed? :\

i feel love - Riverdale, Josie/Cheryl, 1500 words. Fake dating! This was for femslashex, and my recip described the relationship between these two as being almost political, which I found extremely inspiring. In the course of writing this fic I realized how freaking awesome Valerie is and how much I loved writing her.

Justine, a shy 16-year-old girl raised as a vegetarian, goes off to veterinarian school to join the family business. But the school turns out to be a den of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll where the hazing of the new students is brutal and includes, among other things, eating a raw rabbit's kidney. "It's just food poisoning", says the nurse when she starts feeling strange. But that doesn't explain why she suddenly can't stop thinking about meat. Raw meat. And animals just don't seem to be enough...

Raw got quite a buzz when it showed on festivals last year; reports of people fainting, throwing up, walking out in disgust. And yes, it is - like many a French movie in recent years - exceptionally bloody at points. I don't want to say exceptionally violent, but at the same time I do, because even though there are relatively few scenes of actual acts of violence, the whole plot of Justine trying to adapt to a brand-new world and brand-new desires feels psychologically violent, there are no safe places anywhere including her own mind anymore. And at the same time I love that it doesn't play it for the usual horror beats; both the photo and the plot play out more as a regular, if disturbing, coming-of-age story about sex, family and friendship, where the protagonist just happens to crave human flesh. Not for everyone, but I kinda loved it.

Hmmm

I have a strange desire to do

A) a micro version of MaNoWriMo

(like, not even the 30k mini version, but, like. Average of 100 words/day as a primary goal -- yes, that's only 3000 in the month, and I used to be able to do that in a day, but that's more fiction than I've written all year -- with 10k as a secondary goal (333) and 30k as a tertiary (1k/day). Or maybe 10k as the primary goal? I don't know.)

B) that is a remix of Disney beauty and the beast

(not with lyrics and shit, and I could just do a regular batb retelling, but I kind of want to take the Disney specific stuff, gaston and the west wing and the specific castle staff, and play with it and make it better. A few elements of the live version but mostly based on the animated one.)

(which is for one thing ridiculous because Disney version, and for another thing cheating for nano because pre-existing story, and for a third feels lazy and cop-out-ish and why would anyone read a 10k-word retelling of a fucking Disney movie, and all the rest of the bullshit that my inner critic likes to dump in my head whenever I want to do something)

I definitely don't want to nano the disabled-beauty/autistic?-beast story-of-my-heart, because it's too important for Nani treat, net, and I need something that means less. But.

Stupid idea? Good idea? Shut up and go back to crocheting?

Rewatch: 10 Cloverfield Lane is still one of my favourite movies of recent years. There's a couple of reasons for this, and for why I think it's one of the most relevant horror movies recently, no less so after the discussions of the past few weeks, but since this is one of those movies where you really want to be unspoiled the first time I'm going to put it under a cut.

Spoilers! )

I also watched the first two episodes of Slasher, which... nah. Nicely done and everything, but it feels way too much like a regular 96-minute slasher movie, albeit a good one, stretched to a whole television season. But it's impressive what the Canadians manage to get away with putting on television screens in terms of gore.

Harvey Weinstein and Riley Finn

I've been meaning to write *something* about the whole Harvey Weinstein thing. There are a hundred things I could link you to. However, the thing that I can't get out of my head is this bit of dialogue from 'The Initiative' (slightly edited):

Parker : [Laughs] oh, yeah. The word is stamina. I mean, definitely a bunny in the sack, but later on, well. You know the difference between a freshman girl and a toilet seat? A toilet seat doesn't follow you around after you use it.

Riely decks Parker who hits the floor.

Riley : (Walking between Forrest and Graham.) I can't believe that I did that.

Forrest : What the hell for?

Riley : He--he was just being so crude.

Forrest : Please. You've heard me say much grosser things than that.

Riley : I just didn't like hearing him (he pauses thoughtfully) talk about buffy that way. I think I... Well, I guess I like her.

I have said before that I think Riley Finn was a metaphor for male privilege (straight, white male privilege specifically) and this is the perfect example.

Riley is a nice guy. Decent. Works hard. Goes to church. Serves his country. And it's possible we're meant to cheer him on for decking Parker. But. The line that stands out is Forrest's:

You've heard me say much grosser things than that.

The only thing different is that Riley happens to like Buffy. The whole of the cold open is a lengthy frat-boy-ish objectification of women. And Riley never speaks up.

I wish they'd done more with him. I can't even tell if the metaphor was deliberate, or if they just took the most basic template possible to create him, and the metaphor was built in.

However, it's useful. (Also see Xander of course.) Because in creating him, they essentially made Buffy date the Patriarchy. And the Patriarchy couldn't hack it and ran away.

But... they never really made the Patriarchy face its issues. Maybe they couldn't. Maybe that would have been a step too far for Joss... (*SO* not surprised at his ex-wife's allegations.)

And so it goes. From the Weinsteins and the Trumps at the top, through the Whedons and the Gibsons right down to the guy on the bus who puts his hand on your knee.

Because all the Riley Finns in the world just laugh when their friends are crude.

Not because she's your sister, your mother, your daughter, your girlfriend. Because he is your brother, your father, your son, your friend.

(ETA: Much like white people need to tackle racism, and straight/cis people need to tackle LGBT+ bigotry.)

Twitter brings me good things.

MNSBC: Lawrence: 'Stunned' by John Kelly's attack on Rep. Wilson
While defending President Donald Trump's "brave" condolence call to a Gold Star family, Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly attacked Rep. Frederica Wilson, calling her an "empty barrel." Lawrence O'Donnell explains why Kelly was noble and cruel all at once.

This is 19 minutes long, but it's worth it. And it's what we need more of - straight white guys calling out their own.

Another real classic: A Page Of Madness is unique in that it's one of very few Japanese silent movies to survive. It's also creepy as fuck. Between the nightmarish imagery, the complete lack of intertitles, and large bits of it supposedly missing, I'm not exactly sure what's going on, but then neither is anyone else, apparently. It's set in a mental institution, drifting in and out of the delusions and memories of the patients while apparently telling the story of a family where the father is the custodian of the place and the mother is an inmate. It's got scenery straight out of German expressionism and insane, jittery jump cuts to rival The Man With A Movie Camera. I have no idea what's going on, but 91 years on, it's still... well, creepy as fuck.

First off, with a throwaway background movie marquee that advertises "Bend it Like Bentham", The Good Place is officially the best sitcom that the universe has ever known. And I will fight anyone who says otherwise.

Second, I have been drooling over a 40s-style tilt fedora at East Village Hats, and wishing I'd bought one last year for my big holiday gift instead of a peacock-blue wide-brimmed fedora which I love, but which is more generic. (But the color! That's what nabbed me when I walked in to buy.) When I was chatting with the owner, Peggy Carter came up, and I mentioned that I had one of the official red Peggy Stetsons. We bemoaned how little it looks like Peggy's actual hat and she offered to re-block mine so it would look more like the hat that the costume designer mocked up out of the blank Stetson sent her. Anyway, she's reblocking it and now I'm wishing I hadn't said yes to a dinner party next Saturday, before getting an invite to a costume party the same night. (The latter is in NJ, so not realistic to try to do both.) Perhaps I'll just wear Peggy hat to school on the 31st anyway -- I wear so much vintage and vintage repro that half the time I already look like I'm doing Peggy cosplay. (From the broader sense of her wardrobe, not the blue suit beloved of cosplayers.)

And I still want the Grand Film Noir tilt fedora, but probably not in red. But it is one of those serious save-up items. Then I want a proper, well-fitting cloche, and a black cocktail hat with a veil. Then I need a life fabulous enough to wear a black cocktail hat with a veil.

Deadwood rewatch continues. Jack Langrishe just showed up, and Hearst is an Evil MoFo. And Steve the Drunk makes me think of Steve the Pirate in Dodgeball. But only his name. I thought Joanie/Jane were already obviously a couple by this point, rather than semi-roommates; I am definitely misremembering things. They did become a real couple, right? Or did I just wish that into existence? I still go "awwww" over Ellsworth, but he is mansplaining to Alma too much. And wow, Seth/Martha have progressed to handholding. They'resohot. And I am still in love with Sol. I remembered how angry Trixie was, but she's just so awesome anyway. And Al continues to inspire such loyalty. Including in me.

The Stranger Things phone game is too addictive for my own good. Send help.

... Well, it's semi-addictive. I tend to play in bursts of 30 minutes or so because the gameplay is slightly repetitive and I get tired of it quickly, but no more so than, say, the Lego games - I just get bored with punching things to collect stuff. I played for a couple hours today because after a day or two of beating my head against one of the puzzles, I managed to figure out the solution without having to look up any cheats, and this got me into a whole new dungeon and I didn't want to stop.

It's an adorable game, though. It's got retro 80s-style graphics and puzzles that are just hard enough to be challenging without being flat-out impossible. I've had to look up a cheat to get through one level so far, and I also wish I'd figured out in the beginning that it's very useful to do a bunch of the side quests before you try to fight through too many of the dungeons because you level up on health and carry slots, so it makes the dungeons slightly easier and less frustrating when you aren't dying all the time.

I don't play very many games and I'm having a blast with this one, so take that for whatever it's worth.
